The Nefarious Frink Gwokestra is a unique musical experience that captures the infectious grooves of Africa and the French Antilles and infuses them with the sounds of jazz and the blues. Founded in Pittsburgh by saxophonist Nathan Frink and master drummer Charles Lwanga in the fall of 2012, the band is a special blend of electric guitar and bass, horns, percussion, and more percussion that would easily blend into the street festivals of Carnival and is sure to get the audience moving.
The songs themselves are a mixed bag of originals, traditional melodies, jazz standards and afrobeat jams. Performing without a predetermined set-list, the group gives each performance of every tune an original feeling from night to night, drawing on powerful instrumental solos, driving percussion, and spontaneous vocal improvisation.
Rounding out the lineup for this eight piece ensemble are a combination of veteran Pittsburgh musicians and newcomers to the local scene including Dan McMillan and Zach Haras on percussion, Greg Brancati on electric bass, William Middleton on trumpet and guitarists Stephen Hager and John Bagnato. Each draws on his own musical background to contribute to the diverse array of musical concoctions presented on stage.
